Every career starts somewhere, but few end up exactly where they expect it to go.

That was one of the first lessons shared during this year’s Career Development Luncheon, where Palmetto GBA interns met with five company directors to discuss career growth, leadership and the journeys that shaped their careers. Rather than focusing on job titles or accomplishments, the discussion began with one simple question: How did we get here?

Representing different areas across the company, Scott Burkholder, Systems Assistant Vice President; Alex Delage, Systems Assistant Vice President; Donna Salais, Reimbursement Director; Arteya Robinson Hudson, Audit and Reimbursement Director; and Melanie Nanney, Audit and Reimbursement Director, each reflected on the paths that led them to a leadership position. While each story was different, one message remained consistent: few careers follow a straight path.

Scott Burkholder shared how a passion for technology led him into a career that looked different from the degree he earned. Donna Salais looked back on nearly four decades with Palmetto GBA, sharing how a move from auditing to accounting opened the door to opportunities she never expected. Alex Delage spoke about a time when she wasn’t sure what direction her career would take, reminding interns that it’s okay if the path they imagine today changes over time. Arteya Robinson Hudson reflected on beginning her career as an auditor before advancing into leadership, reinforcing that growth often comes through experience and embracing new challenges.

As interns asked questions throughout the luncheon, the conversation shifted from career paths to the habits that help people grow. Directors encouraged interns to ask questions, build meaningful relationships and stay curious, reminding them that professional growth involves much more than technical skills.

The discussion also highlighted Palmetto GBA’s commitment to developing associates and creating opportunities for growth. Directors encouraged interns to think bigger, recognize the value of their fresh perspectives and take advantage of opportunities to continue learning throughout their careers.

As the luncheon ended, each director shared one final piece of advice they hoped interns would carry with them.

Scott Burkholder told them to “stay humble and always speak the truth.” Donna Salais reminded interns to seek understanding and learn the “why” behind their work. Alex Delage emphasized the importance of listening with the intent to understand. Melanie Nanney encouraged interns to embrace opportunities, explaining that volunteering for workgroups and community service projects can build expertise, strengthen relationships and open doors for future growth.

Although every director shared a different story, their message was the same: stay curious, keep learning and remain open to where your career may lead.
