A Cut Above the Rest

Cancer is a terrible disease that can affect anyone at any time, but when it takes a child, the anguish is unimaginable. After Division 34 Technology Support Center supervisor Ryan McMillan's friend lost her 8-year-old son to brain cancer, he felt he had to do something.

So Ryan joined Team Richard and the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to raise money for research to find cures for childhood cancers. Now, every year Ryan and the rest of Team Richard shave their heads and beards to raise money for St. Baldrick’s.

This year Ryan, Camille Bailey, Emma Holsclaw and her father Kyle Holsclaw (left to right), got in the chair for the worthy cause. Emma even donated two feet of her hair that will help children suffering from hair loss!

When it was all over, Team Richard raised $4,000, and the March 23rd event (that included 14 other teams) raised $60,000.

Over the last 18 years the Columbia event has raised $1.3 million. And the work will continue.

“We have been participating in St. Baldrick’s for seven years and have no plans of stopping," said Ryan. "Now, we start growing out our hair and beards again for next year."
