Manager of the Quarter Hal Bowles says he leads by listening

Palmetto GBA’s latest Manager of the Quarter is dedicated to his team and to meeting goals and deadlines. Application Development Manager Hal Bowles led the Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) Systems team through multiple large projects in 2019 and 2020.

“Throughout the team’s game-changing efforts, Hal remained dedicated and committed to the team goals and initiatives, often working nights and weekend alongside team members to ensure success,” said Systems and Support Chief Information Office and Vice President Nella Bishop. “His performance and impact on the EDI team and Palmetto GBA have been exemplary.”

Bowles led his team to complete and support of significant initiatives, including infrastructure and application test plan documentation to expand Disaster Recovery Exercise testing for the EDI workflow application. But he says his recognition as Manager of the Quarter reflects the performance of his team rather than his individual accomplishment.

“They have taken on a massive amount of work, and they keep delivering,” Bowles said.

As far as his part in his team’s performance, Bowles says he’s a great listener.

“It’s important to know how to listen to and ask the right questions,” he said. “And I always give feedback to the team. I hold them to a high standard and myself to an even higher standard.”

High performance does not always mean perfect performance, and Bowles encourages other managers to empower team members to think outside the box.

“Never discourage the team from taking chances, and know they are going to make mistakes,” he said. “But make sure everyone learns from those mistakes.”
