How One Employee Is Donating Her Hair To Help Children Suffering From Medical Hair Loss
We caught up with our very own Senior Administrative Associate, Kate Tiru, who is donating a portion of her hair to Locks of Love. Locks of Love is a nonprofit charity, established in 1997, that provides custom-made hair prosthetics to disadvantaged children up to the age of 21 who have suffered hair loss because of a medical condition.
What made you want to participate in Locks of Love?
It can be difficult for a child suffering from hair loss beyond their control, and you want your child, or any child, to feel their best. This was a way that I could help others.
Have you participated in this charity before?
Yes, I participated around 15 years ago, and it was such a great experience that I wanted to do it again.
How do you feel the donation of your hair will help others?
Donating my hair will help restore a child's confidence and give them a sense of empowerment. I want a child to step in front of a mirror, knowing he/she is beautiful. With the wigs and pieces that are created from donated hair, imagine a child that doesn't feel they have to hide because they are embarrassed. Imagine a child that will no longer have to wear a hat out of fear that people will stare. This is why I support this cause.
Do you plan on participating again?
If I can donate my hair again, without a second thought, I would.
What would you say to someone who would like to donate?
Donate. Just Do It. Your hair will grow back. A child suffering from alopecia, or hair loss from cancer treatment, doesn't have that luxury. You will feel so glad you did.
