A Journey of Hope and Support

As National Kidney Month, March holds a special significance for Leslie Hodges, a registered nurse and medical reviewer at Palmetto GBA. It marks a journey of love, sacrifice and unwavering support as she donated a kidney to her daughter, Alexa Mills. This journey has inspired Leslie to help others by raising awareness about kidney health and the importance of organ donation.
Alexa’s Battle with Kidney Disease
At age 13, Alexa was diagnosed with IgA nephropathy, a chronic kidney disease with no cure. During the years that followed, her condition progressed to stage 5 renal failure, meaning her kidneys could no longer filter waste from her blood. Alexa began dialysis in December 2023 and was placed on the kidney transplant list, a process that could take months or even years.
Despite the challenges, Alexa remained hopeful. Friends and family rallied around her, signing up to be screened as potential donors. Among them was her mother, Leslie, who turned out to be a perfect match. On July 10, 2024, Leslie donated a kidney to Alexa, a surgery that marked a new beginning for both of them. “My health is better than it ever has been, and I am blessed beyond measure for her love and sacrifice,” said Alexa.
Support from Palmetto GBA
Leslie is thankful for the support she received throughout this journey from the Palmetto GBA team. The Human Resources Department made the process of starting Family Medical Leave seamless, and her coworkers were understanding and supportive during her return to work. “Working for a company that values and supports its employees during such critical times has been a blessing,” said Leslie.
Raising Awareness and Giving Back
Determined to raise awareness about kidney donation, Leslie has made it her mission to participate in the Alabama Kidney Foundation's annual walks. “I want to get the word out and help raise money and awareness for those in need,” Leslie said. Her daughter, now age 24, is following in her footsteps and has been chosen as this year’s honorary patient chair for the Wiregrass Kidney Walk & Celebration, a regional Alabama Kidney Foundation event that raises funds to assist kidney patients.
“I am incredibly proud of Alexa and look forward to seeing the positive impact she will have as the 2025 honorary patient chair,” Leslie added. “Together, we can make a difference and bring hope to others fighting this disease.”
A Message of Hope
Leslie and Alexa's story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of organ donation and the positive impact it can have on lives. They invite everyone to join them in the 2025 Wiregrass Kidney Walk & Celebration and help make a difference in the lives of kidney patients. Leslie and Alexa have shown that with love, support and determination, even the most challenging battles can be faced with hope and resilience.
